dc.description.abstract This study was prepared as the concept paper for a major project on philanthropy in Islamic societies organized by the State Islamic University (UIN) of Jakarta, Indonesia, and funded by the Ford Foundation. The task set for this contribution was to clarify the rationale for a focus on philanthropy for justice in Islamic societies. This would serve as the conceptual framework for the individual country studies making up the larger project. In particular, this study examines tensions within and among the concepts and institutions underpinning the ‘rights-based’ approach this paper is recommending for the mobilization and organization of charitable giving in present Islamic societies.
