dc.description.abstract Naguib Mahfouz was born on 11 December 1911, in the old Gamaliya quarter of Cairo, and died in Cairo on 30 August 2006 at the age of 94. His first novel, Khufus Wisdom , was published in 1939; his last, The Coffeehouse , appeared in 1988. He wrote thirty-three other novels, and fifteen collections of short stories, as well as autobiographical works, numerous screenplays, and newspaper columns.
